Shibboleth web-based Single Sign-On (SSO) system contains three Components:  

- **Identity Provider (IDP)** – An identity provider (IDP) creates, maintains, and manages user identities and information. Identity Providers are responsible for user authentication and providing required user information to the Service Provider (SP).

### What is JWT (JSON Web Token)? {#what-is-jwt-json-web-token}
JWT, or JSON Web Token, is an open standard used to share information between two parties securely — a client and a server. In most cases, it’s an encoded JSON containing a set of claims and a signature. It’s usually used in the context of other authentication mechanisms like OAuth, OpenID to share user-related information. It’s also a popular way to authenticate/authorize users in a microservice architecture.  

JWT authentication is a token-based stateless authentication mechanism. It is popularly used as a client-side-based stateless session, this means the server doesn’t have to completely rely on a data store (or) database to save session information.  

JWTs can be encrypted, but they are typically encoded & signed.  We will be focusing on Signed JWTs. The purpose of Signed JWT is not to hide the data but to ensure the authenticity of the data. And that is why it’s highly recommended to use HTTPS with Signed JWTs.

### Structure of JWT {#structure-of-jwt}
JWT structure is divided into three parts: header, payload, signature & is separated from each other by dot (.), and will follow the below structure:

- Header  
The header consists of two parts:  
1. The signing algorithm being used
2. The type of token, which is in this case mostly “JWT”  
- Payload
The payload usually contains the claims (user attributes) and additional data like issuer, expiration time, and audience.  
- Signature  
This is typically a hash of the header and payload sections of the JWT. The algorithm which is used to create the signature is the same algorithm mentioned in the header section of the JWT. Signature is used to validate that the JWT token wasn’t modified or changed during transit. It can also be used to validate the sender.  

The header and Payload section of the JWT is always Base64 encoded.


### How does JWT Authentication work? When to use JWT Authentication? {#how-does-jwt-authentication-work-when-to-use-jwt-authentication}

When it comes to API authentication and server-to-server authorization, JSON web token (JWT) is particularly a useful technology. In terms of Single Sign-On (SSO), it means that a service provider can receive trustworthy information from the authentication server. 

By sharing a secret key with the Identity Provider, the Service Provider can hash a part of a token it receives and compare it to the signature of the token. Now, if that result matches the signature, the SP knows that the information provided has come from the other entity possessing the key.

The following workflow explains the authentication flow:

1. User sign-in using username and password.
2. The authentication server verifies the credentials and issues a JWT signed using a private key.
3. Moving forward, the client will use the JWT to access protected resources by passing the JWT in the HTTP Authorization header.
4. The resource server then verifies the authenticity of the token using the public key.  

The Identity Provider generates a JWT certifying user identity, and the resource server decodes and verifies the authenticity of the token using the public key.

Since the tokens are used for authorization and authentication in future requests and API calls great care must be taken to prevent security issues. These tokens shouldn’t be stored in publicly accessible areas like the browser’s local storage or cookies. In case there are no other choices, then the payload should be encrypted.

### How JWT Single Sign-On (SSO) works for multiple web apps {#how-jwt-single-sign-on-sso-works-for-multiple-web-apps}
Single Sign-On (SSO) allows you to authenticate users in your systems and subsequently informs applications that the user has been authenticated. On successful authentication, a JWT token is generated and returned, which can be consumed by the app to create a user session. The token is automatically verified with the IDP when they sign in. The user is then allowed to access the apps without being prompted to enter separate sign-in credentials.  

This security mechanism allows applications to trust the sign-in requests it gets from the systems. Furthermore, these apps will only grant access to the users who have been authenticated by you/admin & hence Single Sign-On (SSO) relies on JSON Web Token (JWT) for securing the exchange of user authentication data. ### What is FAPI? {#What-is-FAPI}

[Financial-grade API](https://www.example.com) or FAPI, is a set of standards and regulatory guidelines to protect sensitive customer data and prevent bad actors from manipulating it. Since financial records and personal details of users are being shared by organizations via APIs, there needs to be some form of accountability to keep them in check. FAPI is just that.

Besides this, if you’re involved in financial activities in the European Economic Area (EEA), you also need to adhere to the [Payment Services Directive (PSD2)](https://www.example.com). Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a requirement of the Payment Services Directive. It is like the commonly known Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). It basically means that when a customer is performing a transaction online using their debit or credit card, they will be required to enter a secondary one-time password generated on their mobile banking application.

FAPI, however, isn’t just limited to the EEA. It is a protocol developed by the OpenID foundation and is built on the OAuth 2.0 and OIDC (OpenID Connect) frameworks. It aims to bring enhanced security to API standards for online transactions in various industries such as healthcare, insurance, telecommunications, etc. This is done thanks to four important factors:

- Any exchange of data between the client and server is via JSON Web Tokens (JWT).
- JWTs use asymmetrical key pairs to ensure cryptographic password exchange.
- The exchange of JWT allows a limited set of security algorithms.
- It offers conformance testing methods, which can be automated.

Clients can trust the authentication that includes mutual Transport Layer Security (TLS) and JSON Web Token (JWT) based mechanism that functions on the application level.

**Strengthen API security and reduce risk**  
Open banking financial providers require a top level of security to transfer data and transactional information to Fintech providers without risking intrusion. It needs to adhere to legal and regulatory standards and prove that the customer’s privacy and sensitive information are protected.

**Token-based data exchange**  
Enforcing the use of a signed JWT that is cryptographically encrypted increases the level of trust between the client and server. The cryptographic proofs are an optional feature in OpenID Connect.

The banking-level security of FAPI using OAuth and OpenID Connect is available not just for financial providers. It can be used by just about any online service provider that deals with a sizable number of clients and customers that need their private information protected, yet easily accessible.

### Scope of FAFI {#Scope-of-FAFI}

As mentioned above, FAPI isn’t just limited to the banking sector. It can be used as a general standard for sharing sensitive information via APIs while guaranteeing client security. This is made possible by using one of the following four standards

**Read only API security profile**  
Read-only access, as the name suggests, only allows viewing the contents shared by the API, but not editing it. This can come in handy when one provider wants to verify the details of a user before confirming a transaction. It has a comparatively lower risk compared to the read-and-write access profile. Thus, applying a lower protection level is satisfactory. However, it contains sensitive information and must have a higher protection level than the basic OAuth level.

**Read & write API security profile**  
Read and write access to a bank’s API has a much higher level of risk, requiring a higher level of security as well. The OIDF Financial-grade API (FAPI) is a REST API that provides JSON data representing higher-risk information. This profile provides an ID token in response to the authorization request. However, it doesn’t always provide the identity of the resource owner. It may be used as an identifier for a time-limited subject that wishes to change user data.

**JWT secured authorization response mode for OAuth 2.0 (JARM)**  
 This profile features a JSON Web Token (JWT) that carries various data points to secure the transmission. The URL of the issuer that created the response, the client ID for whom the response is intended, and the expiration date of the JWT. Together, these parameters really amp up the security of the profile for OAuth 2.0. They are present in the token even in case of an error response. And since it has an expiration date, it cannot be misused by unauthorized users on the same system.

**Client initiated back channel authentication (CIBA) profile**  
This profile applies to both read-only and read-and-write APIs. Client-Initiated Backchannel Authentication, or CIBA, extends OpenID Connect to a decoupled flow where authentication can be started on one device and carried out on another. It enables direct communication between the client and the authorization server. All the above essentially hardens the level of security offered by OAuth and OIDC. Additionally, CIBA offers a new method of requesting the authentication of an end user. In order to protect the messages, the Kerberos authentication procedure uses a traditional shared secret cryptography. This prevents packets moving across the network from being read or altered.

### What are the Kerberos Authentication steps ? {#kerberos-authentication-steps}

There are 2 servers that enable Kerberos to work. An authentication server, and a ticket-granting server.

1. **Authentication Server :** Confirms that a known user is making an access request and gives a ticket-granting ticket.
2. **Ticket granting Server :** Confirms that a user is making an access request to a known service and gives service tickets.

**Step 1 :** User sends a request to the authentication server mentioning they want to access a service. The Authentication service is validated if the service is coming from a known and grants a TGT: ticket-granting ticket.

**Step 2 :** The authentication server sends the TGT back to the user along with another message encrypted with the user’s secret key.

**Step 3 :** The user decrypts the message with their secret key and sends the TGT with some additional information to the Ticket Granting Server.

**Step 4 :** The ticket-granting server decrypts the TGT, performs some validations, and creates a service ticket (ST). This service ticket with some additional information is sent back to the User.

**Step 5 :** The user decrypts the message, creates some authenticator message, and sends the user authenticator and the service ticket to the service.

**Step 6 :** The service does its decryption, and validation and creates its own final authenticator message. This is sent back to the user. These messages allow the user and the server to mutually authenticate each other and securely distribute a symmetric service session key. This allows both the user and service to communicate, authentication information securely.
